- Are you seeking a warm and experienced LGBTQ+ affirmative therapist for yourself, child, or teen?
- Has your child recently come out to you? Are members of your family having trouble adjusting to or understanding your child’s LGBTQ+ identity?
- Has your child experienced discrimination or adversity due to their identity? Do you believe they may need an advocate and experienced professional to help them manage this stress?
- Are you a typically happy and healthy LGBTQ+ person looking for a supportive therapist to help you tackle issues not at all related to your sexuality or gender?
The LGBTQ+ community experiences difficulty more frequently during identity development because they must face a unique set of barriers that their heterosexual peers do not —-> NOT because their tasks of physiological and psychological development differ in any way! LGBTQ+ youths are more likely to be bullied, physically assaulted, and are more likely to feel unprotected by teachers. Most do not have LGBTQ+ adults in their lives to model a healthy identity, therefore are left to depend on social media, which hyper-sexualizes and pathologies LGBTQ+ identity. ALL LGBTQ+ youth, regardless of the level of acceptance they receive, has experienced some degree of discrimination, even if only indirectly, through social media and popular culture.
For this reason, LGBTQ+ affirmative counseling benefits youths most, even if their reason for seeking treatment has nothing to do with their sexuality or gender identity. At Pinellas Psychology Associates we understand that your LGBTQ+ identity is but just one part of who you are. We provide affirmative therapy, meaning we are not here to evaluate or judge you. We are here to support and help you feel more affirmed about who you already know you are. And if you are not sure how you identify yet, that’s okay, and pretty darn normal, too!
